Old Kazaks Honour Martyr After 40 Years Of His Martyrdom!



Today at Akhnoor War memorial in Jammu and Kashmir, two brothers, several school mates and the 2 JAT Regiment of the Indian Army, honoured the memory of a young officer who laid down his life, defending the country in the 1971 Indo Pak war by lighting a flame at the Memorial. Several senior Army Officers led by Major General KS Venugopal and Colonel HS Mavi Commanding Officer of 2 JAT Regiment were beside Dr Gopi Mohan Naresh and Mr Praveen Naresh as they lit the Memorial Torch again near Raipur Crossing along Munawar Tawi River where the brave heart actually died in battle. Second Lieutenant Radha Mohan Naresh was commanding a platoon, and tasked to defend the Raipur crossing, on the Munawar Tawi river, where the Pakistani Army had launched a major infantry offensive. Naresh led his platoon from the front, as they fought a valiant battle to hold the post, till reinforcements arrived. In doing so, the brave Officer, fell, in one of the most ruthless battles of the 71 war. Second Lieutenant Naresh was laid to rest, somewhere near the Indo-Pak border. The officer was just 21 years old and barely a week since being commissioned into the Jat Regiment of the Indian Army, as the War erupted.

There were no memorials, epitaphs or memorabilia for Naresh, but for a passport size photograph, still held with his mother, Smt. Subhadramma. The valiant soldier’s deeds went unsung, except at Sainik School, Kazhakootam, Kerala, where generations of cadets remembered him with pride and reverence. For he was the first of several alumni from the school, who laid down their life for the country. Colonel NJ Nair, Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra the highest decorated Soldier in the Indian Army till date, Major Harshan Ashok Chakra and several other Martyrs from Sainik School Kazhakootam followed Second Lieutenant Radha Mohan Naresh’s resolute footsteps into heroic martyrdom .

Honouring Martyrs from the school during the ongoing Golden Jubilee celebrations of Sainik School Kazhakootam was weaved in as one of key programmes by the Old Boys Association of the school. Captain Ramesh Babu (Retd) a member of the Old Boys Association is the architect of this unique but meaningful venture. “There is no better way and occasion to honour the Heroes and inspire the present generation” said Captain Ramesh Babu (Retd). For Dr Gopi Mohan Naresh and Mr Praveen Naresh, who were 17 and 5 years old respectively, when their brother fell in battle, it was a very emotional, proud and private moment, as they lit a flame at the precise spot where their brother died. A bust of Second Lieutenant Radha Mohan Naresh contributed by the family of the brave officer will be unveiled at his Alma Mater in January 2012, during the culmination of Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Agni-II Successfully Launched



DRDO Develop Agni II, the pride of India strategic arsenal was once again launched successfully today i.e 30.09.11 at 9:30 hrs from the wheeler Island off the coast of ORISSA. The launch was a hat trick after successful launches of SHOURYA & PRITHIVI-II, on 24th & 26th September 2011 respectively. The successful launch once again proved reliability of the medium range surface to surface missile.

The 2000 km range surface to surface missile, already inducted and part of countries arsenal for strategic deterrence, was launched as a training exercise by the armed forces. The two stage missile equipped with advanced high accuracy navigation system, guided by a novel scheme of state of the earth command & control system was propelled by solid rocket propellant system. The missile reached an apogee (peak altitude) of 220 km and hit the target. All the radar, telemetry systems, ectopic system tracked & monitored all parameters throughout the trajectory. Two ships located near the target point have tracked the missile in the final stage.

Indian Naval P8i Completes First Flight




Indian navy's first P-8I aircraft for the Indian Navy completed its initial flight today, taking off from Renton Field at 12:02 p.m. Pacific time and landing two hours and 31 minutes later at Boeing Field in Seattle.

During the flight, Boeing test pilots performed airborne systems checks including engine accelerations and decelerations and autopilot flight modes, and took the P-8I to a maximum altitude of 41,000 feet prior to landing. In the coming weeks Boeing will begin mission systems installation and checkout work on the aircraft at a company facility near Boeing Field.

"The P-8I program is progressing well and we are looking forward to this potent platform joining the Indian Navy as part of its fleet," said Rear Adm. DM Sudan, assistant chief of Naval Staff (Air), Indian Navy.

"The P-8I will provide India with the necessary speed and reliability to satisfy the Indian Navy's maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare requirements," said Dinesh Keskar, Boeing India president.

Based on the Boeing Next-Generation 737 commercial airplane, the P-8I is the Indian Navy variant of the P-8A Poseidon that Boeing is developing for the U.S. Navy. In order to efficiently design and build P-8 aircraft, the Boeing-led team is using a first-in-industry, in-line production process that draws on the company's Next-Generation 737 production system.

"Flying the first P-8 for an international customer is a key milestone for our entire team," said Leland Wight, Boeing P-8I program manager. "We have transitioned to P-8I production, and remain on track to deliver the first aircraft to the Indian Navy in 2013."

The P-8I is the first of eight long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft Boeing is building for India as part of a contract awarded in January 2009. An option for four additional P-8I aircraft was included in the original contract.

The aircraft features open system architecture, advanced sensor and display technologies, and a worldwide base of suppliers, parts and support equipment.

The P-8I is built by a Boeing-led industry team that includes CFM International, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Spirit AeroSystems, BAE Systems and GE Aviation.

Boeing, the world's leading aerospace company and the largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military aircraft combined, has significantly expanded its footprint in India in both civil aviation and defense. India has selected the P-8I to fulfill its long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine requirements and the C-17 Globemaster III for its strategic and tactical airlift needs.

EGR Debut Of LCA (Navy) Prototype NP-1





The first EGR of NP1 Naval LCA-Tejas aircraft was conducted at about 1830hrs on the 26 Sep 2011 for its schedule time, had the primary objective of checking aircraft to engine integration and activation of the various systems like Flight control, Hydraulics, Fuel, Electrical, Avionics, etc., which was successfully achieved.

The aircraft will now go through a phase of refinements based on feedback identified during the course of the build up and also observed during the EGR, followed by a series of final integration checks and taxi trials before its maiden flight shortly.

Raptor Is Back!!!



F-22 Raptor returned to the skies today here in a series of test and production flights, the first since a four-month fleet stand down was lifted on Sept. 19, 2011 by the U.S. Air Force.

Aircraft flown are preparing for delivery to the U.S. Air Force. Specific delivery schedules and flight activities are being aligned in conjunction with customer specifications and testing parameters. F-22 final assembly line schedule was not impacted by the stand down and the team continues to roll out Raptors on time, with final aircraft completing in December 2011.

“It’s exciting to see the F-22 Raptor back in the skies,” said Jeff Babione, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin’s F-22 program. “We are dedicated to supporting our customer in return-to-flight activities. It takes a strong team to design, build, maintain and operate the Raptor. I’ m proud to be part of such a team.”

MoD Puts On Hold Joint Venture Of MDL, Government To Bring Out Policy On Formation Of JVs Soon : Antony

Describing the 26/11 incident as a watershed moment for the country’s defence establishment, the Defence Minister Shri AK Antony today said we have come a long way since then. Addressing the meeting of the Consultative Committee attached to his ministry here, Shri Antony said he had asked the Navy to prepare a comprehensive action plan for the security of our Island territories as well.

Shri Antony said the country’s defence policy is based on our own threat perception. He said a sensitive and dangerous neighbourhood has created a complex security environment. Added to this is international trade and energy requirements which necessitate that we have to ensure secure sea lanes of communication.

Giving details of the massive efforts that have been made by the government to beef up coastal security, Shri Antony said the capital expenditure for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard has been doubled in the past three years following the 26/11 tragic incident.

The Defence Minister did not agree with the suggestion that India should follow a policy of hot pursuit against Somalian pirates. Shri Antony said ‘that’s not our policy’. He said twenty Navies of the world are operating in the Gulf of Aden and India is also cooperating with them. He, however, emphasized that a joint effort under the aegis of the United Nations may yield better results.

The Defence Minister also informed the Members that the ministry had decided to put on hold the joint venture of Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) till a policy on JVs is put in place by the Government. Shri Antony said the ministry will study the complaints received from some private shipyards regarding the JV. ‘The issue needs to be fully examined and settled before any forward movement takes place on this front. He also said that JVs must compete for contracts and should not get them on nomination basis. Shri Antony said we are treading on a new path and we would like to ensure that transparency is maintained at all levels.

99 Recruits of the 83 Recruits Course of The Brigade of The Guards attained status of a COMBAT SOLDIER at an impressive and solemn passing out and attestation parade. A colourful Ceremonial Parade was presented by these proud young GUARDSMAN, who are the newest additions to the ARMED FORCES FRATERNITY. These brave young GUARDSMEN have earned their status after sheer hard and strenuous training of thirty four weeks. Keeping with the age old traditions, they were administered the oath of allegiance and devotion to duty by the Adjutant. As they crossed the symbolic LAST STEP in slow march to the famous AULD LAYNE SANG tune of the band, these recruits formally attained the status of Combat Soldiers ready for frontline duties.

Maj Gen SK Gadeock, General Officer Commanding, of a Division reviewed the parade. General Gadeock is an alumni of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. He is a Master of Science (Defence Studies), Master of Philosophy and also done a diploma in Senior Level Defence Management. General Gadeock is an infantry officer with 35 years of service. He was commissioned into an elite Battalion of Brigade of The Guards on 11 Jun 77. During his illustrious career spanning 35 years he has served in various staff, instructional and command appointments such as Logistic Adviser in Botswana, GSO 1 (Ops) of an Armd Div, MO Dte in IHQ of MoD (Army), Brig QM, of a Corps in the North – East Sector.

The General has also been the youngest Aide to the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhawan and Adjutant of the National Defence Academy. The General has also been decorated with two Chief of Army Staff Commendation Cards and one Commendation Card from Army Commander, Eastern Command for his distinguished service and exemplary devotion to duty. He has commanded a GUARDS Battalion and an Armoured Brigade. The General is presently General Officer Commanding, of an Infantry Division.

Medals were presented to outstanding Guardsmen in various disciplines of training. The coveted Overall Best Recruit Trophy was awarded to Guardsman Gyaneshwar Pathak of Carriappa Training Company. It was indeed a proud moment for the kith and kin of these recruits who had come from far flung areas to witness the eventful ceremony in which their wards participated.

First HC-130J Combat King-II Delivered To USAF


NEW PERSONNEL RECOVERY CAPABILITY TO U.S. AIR FORCE WITH HC-130J DELIVERY

Today the first HC-130J Combat King II was delivered to the United States Air Force’s Air Combat Command (ACC). The aircraft was flown from Lockheed Martin Aeronautics’ facility to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., by Gen. Norton A. Schwartz, chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force. This aircraft is the first of 11 currently on order.

Prithvi-II Successfully Flight-Tested





DRDO developed surface to surface strategic PRITHVI (P-II) Missile was successfully flight tested at 9 A.M today i.e. 26th September 2011, from Launch Complex-III, ITR, Chandipur, Balasore District in Orissa. The launch was carried out by the Armed Forces as a part of regular training exercises.

PRITHVI-II, the first indigenous surface to surface strategic Missile, capable of attacking targets at ranges of 350 kms, reached the predefined target in the Bay of Bengal with a very high accuracy of better than 10 meters. All the Radars, Electro optical systems located along the coast have tracked and monitored all the parameters of the Missile throughout the flight path. An Indian Naval ship located near the target witnessed the final event.

The entire launch operations were carried out by the Armed Forces and monitored by the Scientists of DRDO. The flight test of the PRITHVI-II Missile met all the Mission objectives and was perfect like text book launch. PRITHVI-II Missile has been successfully flight tested number of times as part of the training exercise. Today’s launch again proves the reliable flight testing of PRITHVI. Scientific Adviser to Raksha Mantri Dr. V.K Saraswat congratulated all the scientists and other employees of DRDO and the Armed Forces for the successful flight test of PRITHVI (P-II).

Shaurya Launches Successfully!


The DRDO developed 700 kms range Shourya Missile is successfully flight tested at 2.30 PM from Launch Complex III of ITR, Balasore on 24th Sep 2011. The Missile was launched from a canister in a ground launch mode. The launch of the missile was perfect like in text book and followed the path exactly to the predefined target in Bay of Bengal. All the Radar Stations, Telemetry Stations, Electro-Optical Stations all along the East Coast have tracked and monitored all the mission parameters. Ships located near the target have also tracked and witnessed the final event. The Missile has reached the target within few meters accuracy. The Missile is equipped with multiple advanced computing systems, very high accuracy navigation and guidance systems.


DRDO Chief Controller Shri Avinash Chander congratulated all the scientists and employees of DRDO and other establishments. Director DRDL Shri P Venugoplalan, Director ITR Shri SP Dash, Director SPIC Shri Satish Kumar and Programme Director AK Chakravarti have monitored all the preparatory operations. Shri A Joseph Project Director and team have prepared the missile and conducted the launch flawlessly.

Army Aviation & AMC Continue Relief ops In Sikkim













Army's continuing rescue efforts in quake-affected regions of Sikkim has entered the fourth day today. While most daring and gallant acts of rescue by the men in olive greens will in all likelihood go unreported and unheralded, some individual and collective acts that have saved lives are now beginning to emanate from the region. More such reports are expected to follow in the coming days.

In one such incident, toiling well past midnight amidst most adverse conditions in the aftermath of the Sunday night temblor, Lt Col RK Saini, officer commanding a field workshop of the EME battalion in the outer perimeter of Gangtok city, together with his boys, saved the life of a woman who lay crushed in a car when a combination of earth, stone and an uprooted tree came crashing down on their ill-fated car, which was also carrying her husband and brother.

The car was badly crushed and mangled on the left side where the woman passenger was seated, leaving her lower body badly stuck. She was also grievously injured. Miraculously, both male occupants in the car survived and managed to extricate themselves from the car.

The incident happened almost immediately when the earthquake struck, on a road bend nearly 250 meters from the army's field workshop location in Gangtok. An army jawan from the unit, who was an eye witness to the accident, immediately alerted his superiors who meanwhile were all gathered in an open area after the tremors struck.

Forming a small team, Col Saini and his team rushed to the site with whatever handy equipments that they could lay their hands on that included torches and cutters. Meanwhile, Col P Kapoor, Commanding Officer of the EME battalion managed to get in touch with the GREF (General Reserve Engineer Force), requisitioned additional JCB, bulldozers to the site. He further reinforced fork-lifters and pillar lights to facilitate rescue operations by night.

An army medical officer at the site rendered medical aid to the woman, who was under severe trauma and experiencing excruciating pain. The presence of the onlookers was only making the rescue act tougher by the minute. With possibility of extricating her normally ruled out, a bold decision had to be taken towards saving the life of the victim.

Showing exemplary courage and presence of mind to arrive at a quick decision, a hallmark of any professional soldier, Col Saini decided to cut open the vehicle into several parts. Meanwhile a giant crater was dug on one side of the car to offset any possibility of the vehicle tipping over. By 1.30 am, the team that worked relentlessly all night long had managed to safely bring out the passenger alive. The victim was promptly taken to the hospital for professional Medicare.

Of the nearly 5,500 army men engaged in the rescue and relief operations in Sikkim since Sunday night, at the forefront of the casualty evacuation are 18 army aviators led by Colonel Sanjay Vadhera and his pilots flying four ALH (Advanced Light Helicopters), and Colonel Saleem Shaikh with his pilots operating five Cheetah helicopters.

The gritty aviators have rescued 83 tourists and evacuated 36 casualties so far, and the count is only expected to go more in the coming days. In addition, the pilots have flown 83 members of various composite teams into inaccessible areas in north Sikkim. Two generators have also been inducted under-slung, considered one of the most critical operations by helicopters, and compounded further by the criticality of operations in high altitudes.

"We are ferrying up radio equipments and have airlifted nearly 7,600 kgs of medical supplies so far," says Col Vadhera, who flew in to the disaster area all the way from Misamari, near Tezpur in Assam, the very next morning after the earthquake. "Undaunted, my pilots are all eager to save more lives," adds Col Shaikh, whose helicopters are otherwise operational from Sevoke Road, near Siliguri, routinely.

Meanwhile, the army's medical corps that has deployed 34 medical detachments and relief camps in various places in Sikkim has so far treated nearly 250 out-patients. A concerted effort to treat more casualties if need be, is being augmented and complemented by the medical supplies that the army helicopters are bringing in every possible sorties.

It may be mentioned that 26 civilians and 22 armed forces personnel are also being treated at the four regular military hospitals at Binaguri, Bengdubi and two Field Hospitals at Gangtok and 17 miles out of the state capital.

DCNS Conducts Further Sea Trials With BPC Dixmude


DCNS began new sea trials on 19 September with BPC Dixmude, the French Navy's third Mistral-class force projection and command vessel, which was ordered by the French defence procurement agency (DGA) in April 2009.

This latest test campaign off Toulon is scheduled to last five days and will focus on the ship's communication, surveillance (3D radar), navigation and combat management systems. In this phase of the programme, DCNS's co-contractor STX will also conduct additional platform trials.

The new sea trials follow the tests conducted when the ship was first floated in April 2011 and when it sailed from Saint Nazaire to Toulon in July, which included platform trials and initial testing of the combat system.

IAF Relief Ops In The Earthquake Affected Areas In North Sikkim






The IAF has launched relief operations in quake affected areas of the state of Sikkim since the past two days. Towards this besides the fixed wing aircraft IAF has pressed four Mi-17 helicopters which are presently operating from the Air Force Station Baghdogra airfield.

A total of eight sorties of Mi-17 were undertaken today from Baghdogra airfield towards Chungthang, Lachung and Mangang areas of North Sikkim. Around 10 tonnes of relief material including medicines were helilifted along with 30 Army personnel. The helicopters were carrying out airdrop of food items at some places. In addition one AN-32 was received in the midnight with 4 tonnes of medicines.

A total of 31 civilian casualties with two attendants including lying patients were evacuated from different places as per the requirement of the state government. The Indian Air Force is ensuring that its assets are kept in a state of readiness should the civil administration request for assistance for more aircrafts in carrying out relief and rescue missions in future.

Within hours of the 6.8 magnitude earthquake hitting Sikkim and adjoining areas in the eastern part of the country late Sunday evening, the Indian Army promptly got into the act of providing succour by serving hot meals in the cold night even as large sections of people vacated their houses amidst fears of after-shocks that later followed.

'Operation Trishakti Madad' by the Indian Army, towards rescue and relief efforts of the quake-affected, which has so far resulted in the death of 32 civilians and two army personnel, assumed mammoth proportions by Monday.

Nearly 2,000 civilians are being provided shelter in eight army relief camps at Gangtok, Chungthang, Pegong and Darjeeling, while 400 others are in ITBP relief camps.

Reassured, several children from various relief camps went back home on Monday to don their school uniforms and even attended schools.

Nearly 5,500 army troops and nearly 700 ITBP personnel, numbering 103 army columns of varying sizes are currently engaged in the rescue, restoration and resurrection efforts in the aftermath of the earthquake that also resulted in 25 road blockages and five major land slides on NH-31A, between Siliguri and Gangtok.

The Eastern Command's General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Lt Gen Bikram Singh, who arrived at Sukna cantonment near Siliguri, late Monday night from Kolkata, was briefed on the ongoing Army's relief and rescue efforts, by the Sukna-based Corps Commander, Lt Gen V Bhatia.

The Army Commander will undertake a visit to various affected sites and interact with officials, both in Sikkim and neighbouring West Bengal, on Tuesday.

By late Monday evening, 21 engineering columns of the Army had restored one-way traffic and also partially restored tele-communication and power lines that had snapped immediately after the earthquake. Two-way traffic is expected to be restored by early Tuesday, paving way for easier rescue and communication to areas in north Sikkim.

Meanwhile, in a massive airlift effort by the Indian Army's aviation wing on Monday, four ALH (Advanced Light Helicopters) and five Cheetah helicopters evacuated 26 casualties - both civilians and military personnel, to military hospitals near Bagdogra and Siliguri.

More casevac (casualty evacuation) sorties are also planned for Tuesday. Currently, Army has set up 20 medical detachments in various locations to provide medical aid.

With roads to Mangam in north Sikkim cut off leaving people stranded, 30 persons including several doctors were heli-dropped at Mangam.

The army also set up 11 'langars' or cook houses at various locations in north Sikkim and Darjeeling providing hot meals, lending a genuine humane touch to the relief operations.

Fond Of Ice-Hockey, First PAK-FA Pilot Underwent 400 Trg Hrs Before Debut Flight!

This 49-yr old has flown 70 out of the 80 sorties, so far flown by both PAK-FA/T-50 prototypes. Sergey Bogdan, made history last January by becoming the first fifth generation Russian pilot, and did so again last month by zooming past in front of crowds demonstrating manouvers for 20 mins in the T-50-0. He is fond of ice-hockey, but stops playing two weeks before a major show like MAKC. He says there are no restrictions on him otherwise, like riding a bike etc or indulging in sports of his choice, like ice-hockey.

He retired a full Colonel from service after which he's been a test-pilot with Sukhoi. He underwent 400 training hours before his first flight, and said that the aircraft got airborne after 240 ground runs! He has 4500 hours behind him on Su-17, MiG-29, Mig-23, Su-25, L-29, L-39 and Yak-130 (all put together).

Bogdan has pulled a maximum of 5G in T-50, and said the reason behind it, was that it was a new system under testing, which is why they were not allowed beyond 5G. Bogdan said he had no difficulty in taking T-50 to any altitude, and he had gone beyond 20,000 feet, and endorsed better man-machine interface in a single cockpit, rather than a twin-cockpit. Bogdan called PAK-FA and FGFA technically quite close, but said he had no idea about the J-20 or the F-22 A.

Russian Air Force Lifeline For Near-Dead Микоян МиГ-35, Fulcrum-F !

Zhukovsky : Just when the Russian MiG-35 fighter was being pronounced 'dead and finished', after its ouster from the Indian Air Force's around 12 billion dollar MMRCA (medium multi role combat aircraft) deal for 126 aircraft, there's a saviour in sight for the jet, as the Russian ministry of defence has included it in its procurement programme for the Russian Air Force.

More than 70 jets are being planned for the RAF.

During the biennial airshow, MAKS-2011 in Zhukovsky near Moscow, the director general of RAC-MiG (makers of the aircraft), Sergei Korotkov, said, "We respect the Indian decision on the MMRCA. But the MiG-35 was the most cost-efficient aircraft in this competition, but technical and commercial proposals were separate in the bid for this deal. We fulfilled all factors in the tender. Nevertheless, the aircraft has a bright future, as it has now been included in the Russian MoD's procurement programme."

According to Yuri Guskov, general designer, Phazotron-NIIR Corporation, one of the pioneering developers of the AESA (active electronically scanned array) radar for the MiG-35 aircraft, which was test-proven to the IAF, said at the airshow that there was no criticism of the Zhuk-AE AESA radar installed on the MiG-35 and that work on the radar did slow down a little after the shortlist came out, but has not stopped. Guskov further said the radar has a maintenance-friendly design, which allows dismantling and re-installation of the radar on the field.

Guskov also reiterated that it has been decided that the Russian defence ministry will order the MiG-35 to enter service in the Russian Air Force, which will be equipped with the Zhuk-AE radars, and the company has also offered the radar for the MiG-29 upgrade for the IAF without any airframe changes.

All is not lost for the MiG-35 Fulcrum, as other Asian and Latin American countries, besides the Russian Air Force, have expressed interest in it.

Ceremonial Sword Presented To RAF’s 6 Squadron !!



Originally given to the four Chiefs of Air Staff from the Eurofighter Partner nations in 2003 at Type acceptance, the presentation of the famous steel Eurofighter Typhoon sword to customer air forces has come to symbolise the collaborative strength and partnership of the Eurofighter community and mark significant milestones along the lifetime of the programme.

Swords have a long tradition within the armed forces, being symbols of strength, precision and honour. Known as ‘Squadron Swords’ within the Air Force community, the Eurofighter sword is presented to Typhoon Squadrons to demonstrate the close cooperation between them and Industry.

On the occasion of the 2011 RAF Leuchars air show, the current home to the Royal Air Force Typhoons of 6 Squadron, Wing Commander Roddy Dennis was presented with the latest honorary sword by Eurofighter Export Director, Joe Parker.

Currently the Air Forces of Austria, Germany, Italy, Saudi, Spain and the United Kingdom, operate Eurofighter Typhoon, and they continue to enhance the capabilities and realise the full potential of the Weapon System.

IAF's Golden Arrows Celebrate Diamond Jubilee!



‘Golden Arrows’, the gallant 17 squadron of the Indian Air Force is celebrating its 60th anniversary today. Formed in 1951 at Ambala with Harvard IIB aircraft, the squadron saw action in 1965 and 1971 wars. It also played a key role in ‘Op Safed Sagar’, the Kargil conflict in 1999 and earned the highest number of gallantry awards in the IAF including a Vir Chakra (Posthumous) awarded to Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja.

The celebrations to mark 60 years of glorious service to the nation are being held in the traditional Air Force way at its parent base, along the Western border. The Commodore Commandant of the Squadron Air Vice Marshal BS Dhanoa YSM VM, Air Officer Commanding, Air Commodore Vishwas Gaur VM and the Commanding Officer Wing Commander Rajesh Nandedkar placed the wreath at the War Memorial.

The other celebrations during the event included a Barakhana and a special drill display by the Air Warrior Drill Team and thrilling Skydiving display by ‘Akash Ganga’ team.. The Commanding Officer, Wing Commander Rajesh Nandedkar described this as a “momentous occasion” for the squadron and said that he was proud and honoured to be Commanding the Squadron at this time. He added that the presence of the Commodore Commandant, Air Vice Marshal BS Dhanoa YSM VM, on this historic occasion who was the Commanding Officer of the squadron during Kargil conflict, made these celebrations significant. The then Wing Commander BS Dhanoa was awarded Yudh Seva Medal (YSM) for his sterling leadership during the conflict as the glorious phase in the history of the Golden Arrows, when one Vir Chakra, one Yudh Seva Medal, two Vayu Sena Medals and two Mention-in-Dispatches were awarded for the operations. The squadron played a key role in filming the enemy positions which facilitated their subsequent targeting during the conflict.

Speaking of the occasion, Air Vice Marshal BS Dhanoa credited the achievements of the squadrons to the strong lineage of Commanding Officer, who built such strong foundations and carried forward the highest traditions of the IAF. Many of them rose to the highest rung of the IAF echelons including Air Chief Marshal LM Katre PVSM AVSM and Bar, the Chief of the Air Staff from 04 Sep 1984 to 01 Jul 1985. The other illustrious Commanding Officer of the yesteryears include Air Commodore Jasjit Singh, Air Marshal Janak Kapoor, Air Marshal R Bhasin and Air Marshal MSD Wollen. The squadron was stationed in the Eastern theatre for a considerable period including 1971 Indo-Pak war. It mounted continuous Combat Air Patrol (CAP) missions during the war to keep the enemy air at bay.

Rich tributes were paid to the Martyrs on the occasion, who in the highest traditions of the service made the supreme sacrifice for the nation. It is these spirited men, who charted the course of history and set standards for successive generations to follow. In his message to the Squadron the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Air Command, Air Marshal DC Kumaria stated; “These traditions are the treasure troves of all fighting arms”.
